The Dunks do Devon (again)

Happy_birthday

Somehow, presumably by some sort of wizardry and magic, we are now officially in charge of a 5 year old. Yes, today is Bear’s 5th birthday; 5 years of being a super-calm and definitely-got-my-stuff-together Wonder Mum, worthy of some sort of catalogue photoshoot or something.

I jest, obviously. We are NOT that family.

We have just come back from a lovely week in Cornwall. “But the title above says Devon?”, I hear you cry! You’re not wrong, and so begin our pre-birthday summer holiday shenanigans… Continue reading

A (sort of) open letter to me

ILoveLists

When we went along to our first NCT meeting when I was pregnant with Bear, they asked us to each list 3 things that we like or enjoy. One of those “let’s all get to know each other” things (at a pretty sensible and respectable level, unlike 3 years later when us 8 Mums know WAY more than we probably need to know about one another).

Hello Bear,

You’re into your ‘surprises’ at the moment. Generally they go down a storm when you’re running out of steam at meal times, and are used to coerce you into finishing the boring bits so that you can have a not-so-boring ‘surprise’. Granted, to most toddlers that would be a chocolate- or cake-based something, but you consider those the work of the devil and are chuffed to bits with a pack of raisins or bowl of strawberries, so we just smile and sneak back to the kitchen to finish our Dairy Milk join in the chorus of “Hurrah! Fruit!”

Well it’s a good job you’re into surprises, and that they don’t have to be in chocolate form. Because we have a little surprise for you…and it’s not a lifetime supply of Pom Bears, I’m afraid. Continue reading

Blackboard

Peeps, I have some news for you.

The time has come for me to make a big decision. I’m very excited to tell you that, as of tomorrow, I shall be sending Mummy and Daddy off into the big wide world without me for 3 mornings a week. Meanwhile I shall be starting at playgroup; tomorrow is the first social get-together with my new buddies, just hanging out and keeping it real with some new toys and books. Oh – and there will be some brand new grown-ups there, too. Continue reading

Toddlers & tantrums: the truth

"Today I will mostly be irrational."

“Today I will mostly be irrational.”

When I was pregnant, I had lots of knowing advice and advanced warning about becoming a parent. The worry (lots), the stress (lots), the love (lots), the sleep (not lots).

What they didn’t tell me was how some of the more mundane (and previously piece-of-cake) makings of our daily lives will suddenly become my biggest challenges. And perhaps it is this little lot that should actually have come with a warning. Or, at the very least, a double G&T. Continue reading
